Choosing a manufacturing time-tracking system
By DEVTom · Published · Reviewed
The best manufacturing time-tracking system depends on whether the plant only needs attendance and payroll hours or also needs labour by job, work order, project and activity. Standard time-clock software often solves attendance. Manufacturing-oriented or custom workflows become relevant when job costing, shop-floor scanning, break rules and production visibility matter.
System categories
| Category | Primary job | Use when |
|---|---|---|
| Attendance/payroll clock | Presence and paid hours | Payroll is the main question |
| Workforce platform | Schedules, leave and attendance | Staffing coordination matters |
| ERP/MES capture | Production records in a larger suite | The suite already fits operations |
| Job-costing tracker | Labour by job or project | Margin visibility matters |
| Custom shop-floor app | Distinctive scan and rule workflow | Standard products create material gaps |
Capture interfaces
- •Shared kiosk or tablet near the work
- •NFC badge for employee identification
- •Barcode or work-order scanning
- •Dedicated terminal for controlled environments
- •Mobile capture for field work
- •Supervisor exception review
Rules and outputs to verify
- •Attendance versus labour allocation
- •Break and overtime rules
- •Corrections and approvals
- •Payroll export or integration
- •Job, project, work-order and activity structure
- •Audit history and supervisor visibility
Practical example
A worker identifies themself by NFC on a shared tablet, scans a project barcode, selects an activity and later records a break or task switch. A supervisor reviews exceptions before approved totals are exported for payroll and job-cost reporting.
When a standard product is sufficient
Use a standard clock when attendance, schedules and payroll export are the main requirements and its rules fit. Custom work is not justified merely to reproduce a standard punch workflow.
When a focused custom workflow is justified
Consider it when reliable labour allocation by job and activity, shop-floor scanning, special business rules or production visibility cannot be achieved economically with the existing ERP or a standard product.
Where DEVTom can help
DEVTom can assess the capture environment and design a focused workflow around tablets, NFC, barcodes, exceptions, payroll preparation and costing—without replacing payroll by default.

Frequently asked questions
Is attendance the same as labour allocation?
+−
No. Attendance records when someone is at work; labour allocation connects time to a job, project, work order or activity for operational and costing use.
