How to digitize paper-based processes in manufacturing

Digitizing a manufacturing process means redesigning the flow of data, decisions, approvals and exceptions—not merely converting a paper form into a PDF. Start with one high-friction workflow, observe how it actually operates, define the required data and controls, test a simple digital capture point with real users, and integrate only after the process is stable.
Nine-phase framework

Practical example
For paper timesheets, a pilot can use shared tablets and badge identification while paper remains a temporary fallback. Supervisors compare entries, resolve rule gaps and approve exports before the old sheet is retired.
When custom software is not justified
Use a standard form, quality, maintenance or time product when it fits the controls and environment. Do not custom-build a digital copy of an unstable or low-value paper process.
